Have you ever heard of the catchphrase "Timber City of the South"? Do you even know the name of the city? Did you even wonder as why it is called by that?
Butuan is also considered as the "Home of the Balangays" due to the presence of the Balangay boat that leads to the largest celebration of festival in the city — the Balangay festival. But aside from that, the wonderful city of Butuan is the place called "Timber City of the South" that lies along the historic region of Caraga and can be found in the very stunning north-east of Mindanao. This is in view of the fact that the astounding city of Butuan has a lot of scrumptious trees to offer. One of it is the KAYAM FOREST.
In Barangay Pagatpatan, Butuan City, a forest filled with Kayam trees is protected dearly by the Butuanons. Polynesian chestnuts or Kayam is a type of tree that produces esculent large and sweet nuts. Kayam is said to be brought here in Butuan by Polynesian traders and served as a vittle consumed by the soldiers in order to survive during the war.
It can't be refuted that this beautiful spot is still unknown to some travellers and even to some Butuan settlers but it is also heartwarming to know that a respected journalist and a gorgeous host of a morning show in ABS-CBN — Umagang Kay Ganda, visited this awesome place last May 2018.
