Yes, you heard it right! Ancient trash just right here in the beautiful city of Butuan. But don't worry it isn't as smelly and awful as you think it is. Instead, it serves a chest of knowledge, discreetly depicting the culture and the way of living here in Butuan as early as 7,000 years ago.
Have you ever heard of the word 'midden' before? How about the Bequibel Shell Midden?
According to butuan.gov.ph, a midden is like a large trash pile left by the prehistoric people over many years. What can be found in a midden gives an indication of the food, events and activities in the people's lives.
One of the less explored tourist spots in the historic city of Butuan, the Bequibel Shell Midden houses a mound of domestic refuse containing shells and animal bones, marking the site of a prehistoric settlement. This spot may not be as important to the excursionists compared to the anthropologists who studies prehistoric people and their culture.
In 2001, a team of specialists identified Brgy. Bonbon in Butuan, Philippines as already as 7,000 years ago. Artifacts recovered from the shell midden include stone tools like cobble and flake tools, pig and deer bones and teeth as well as human skeleton.
